How similar are the Tibetan and Chinese languages?

Would learning one aid in learning the other, or are they very different?
Hey, thanks, I was just curious. given how close in proximity Tibet and China are, and how China and Japan share their writing system, I thought there might be similarities, but was not sure.. thanks
